Manufacturer: Aerola |
|
Details:
The Alatus is a single seat self-launching glider available ready built.
Formerly known as the AL12 (and AL12M) in collaboration with Aeros, the Alatus is an evolution from Aerola's high-performance rigid hang-glider wing, the Phantom. Unlike most of its contemporaries, the Phantom uses ailerons for roll control facilitating development into a conventional 3-axis control system. Extensive use of carbon-fibre and other composites have enabled the entire aircraft to weigh less than 90kg! All Alatus' are fitted for aerotow or winch launch, and are riggable by a single person.
When derigged, the entire aircraft can be carried by most family cars, allowing storage at home and eliminating the need for expensive trailers. |

Trike: Aeros 2 Manufacturer: Aeros |
Wing: Aeros Manufacturer: Aeros |
Details:
"Aeros 2" is a trike which features many modern designs such as its fairing which give the trike a classy stylish look. This combines with an excellent flight performance worthy of the best representatives of the new generation trikes.
A small windshield partially protects the pilot from wind without affecting forward line-of-sight. The instrument panel of the "Aeros 2" is recessed into the fairing and painted with special antiglare paint. All fiberglass edges facing the pilot and the passenger are not just covered with rubber, but are instead shaped, rolled and folded inside. This is a complicated thing to do in a fiberglass structure, but this profile increases rigidity of the design, as well as providing additional safety for the pilot.
The landing gear features automobile shock absorbers which helps when flying from unimproved fields and increases safety on rough landings. The trike features a folding pylon makes it possible for one person to rig without any assistance.
The trike can be paired with a number of wings produced by Aeros - the Stranger, Stream, Still and Profi which each have firmly taken their place in the world ultralight market and have made an excellent name for themselves in all possible applications.
Aeros engineers have designed a range of engine mounts for mounting a range of engines including the Rotax 503, Rotax 582, Rotax 912, BMW & Subaru. Aeros will also make custom engine mounts on request.
The Aeros 2 trike in available as either a kit-build or a ready-to-fly trike.
The Aeros 2 trike is known as the Venture 500 (Rotax 503 engine) and the Venture 600 (Rotax 582 engine) in the USA market. |

Trike: GTE (Buggy or Clipper) or Clipper Manufacturer: Air Creation |
Wing: Kiss 400 Manufacturer: Air Creation |
Details:
Whilst flexwing technology has traditionally focussed on producing faster and bigger-engined machines, accepting heavy handling and poor manoeuvrability as part of the bargain, Air Creation Designer Gilles Bru decided that for his next design, rather than blindly following the path of extra speed, he would create a wing that would retain the performance of the current state-of-the-art machines, but advance in the areas of handling and manoeuvrability. The result was the Kiss.
A fabric called Hydranet is used on the upper surface, offering twice the strength of traditional Dacron, and is almost impossible to tear. The Hydranet upper surface is joined at the rear to the Dacron lower surface by a web of flexible Neoprene, which allows the wing to flex and provides light and smooth control response.
The Kiss 400 is a 13m² wing rated to carry a maximum all-up weight of 400kg, making it ideal for the majority of pilots needs.
The base trike model is the Twin trike, which is kept very basic with no fibreglass farings yet the Twin proudly shows off it's framework in a smooth epoxy coated finish. Noticeable features are the fully cupped pedals, full screen binnacle, side stowage bags and under-slung radiator cowling (582 only) which all compliment the solid trike unit.
In 'Buggy' specification the Twin trike is enclosed in a smooth glass fibre shell and has finned wheel fairings for enhanced directional stability at high speed. The cockpit fairing reduces drag, and coupled with the windscreen reduces slipstream for the occupants. It also provides a useful underseat stowage area.
The 'GTE' trike complements the Twin by offering a large number of optional extras as standard. These include more comfortable seats and a larger 60-litre fuel tank. The GTE specification also includes enhanced side stowage bags and rear seat stowage bag, and inertia-reel shoulder straps for occupant comfort. A rear footrest kit and heavy-duty tyres also come as standard.
The Clipper is the pinnacle of the Air Creation trike range and has all of the GTE features listed above but in addition the trike unit is enclosed with a forwards fairing like the Buggy trike and has an additional rear fairing/ luggage container beneath the engine which together with fairings for the gear legs increases the aerodynamic efficiency of the trike unit and completes a very elegant picture.
Although offered as a kit-built aeroplane, the Kiss has been required to meet the full specifications of the British Civil Aviation Requirements Section S which is considered the most thorough standard for microlight aircraft in the world, and provides an excellent guarantee of structural and flight safety standards.
The Kiss is sold in the UK as a fast-build kit. |

The Kiss 450 has a wing area of 15m², and a max load of 450kg, for serious touring or load-carrying capacity requirements.

Trike: Clipper 912 Manufacturer: Air Creation |
Wing: iXess Manufacturer: Air Creation |
Details:
The iXess is the new performance wing from Air Creation and provides stunning performance at both ends of the speed range, coupled with Air Creation's trademark sweet handling and poise.
Traditionally to achieve high speed requires a small wing with high wing loading, the downside of which is high stall speed and associated high speeds and distances for takeoff and landing. To fly slowly required large wings with poor handling definition and large displacements in turbulence, however, the iXess achieves both high and low speed flight and predictable precise handling from just one medium sized wing due to its incredible aerodynamic efficiency.
The Clipper 912 trike makes an excellent partner for the iXess and has large stowage bags and an under engine luggage compartment making it ideal for long distance touring.
Flylight are currently working on the Section-S testing for the iXess. Initial predictions are that the iXess with a Clipper trike should be available to the British market in Spring 2004. |

Trike: XT-912 Manufacturer: Airborne |
Wing: Streak 2 Manufacturer: Airborne |
Details:
The XT-912 made it's debut at Sun N Fun in April 2003 and whilst it may at first glance look simply like an Edge X with a 912 engine, looking closer will reveal that the XT base is a total re-design.
The XT can be set up easily by one person due to the fact that the monopole folds independently of the engine and features a gas strut to help lift the wing onto the trike base with minimum effort. The trike features rear shock absorbers and on the front again high quality double action adjustable shock absorbers are featured.
The seat frame has been widened over the Edge X and the cockpit has a taller windscreen for improved wind deflection.
The wide rear 6 inch wheels remain a feature as with our other models but the wheel spats have been redesigned to include an aerodynamic fin.
The XT-912 comes standard with the new Streak 2 wing which features a mylar leading edge.
The XT features a Rotax 912 delivering a smooth 80 HP to a new 3 blade composite propeller and t massive 60+ litre fuel tank gives the pilot enough airtime for extensive cross country flights.
Digital instrumentation is standard on the XT which uses the Skydat GX2 engine and flight management instrument. |

Trike: Nomad Manufacturer: Flight Research |
Wing: Typhoon Manufacturer: Solar Wings |
Details:
The Nomad is a single seat trike unit designed to fall into the unregulated sub 70kg category at the time when aiworthiness regulations were being introduced for heavier microlights.
Rather than the traditional upright seating arrangement found in most trikes, the pilot of the nomad instead lays in the prone position (head first) rather like a hang-glider. In fact the entire machine was more of a powered hang glider with wheels than a microlight trike.
The pilots position within the craft made it a little awkward to taxi on the ground but excelled in power-off soaring / gliding.
Powered by a either a Solo 140cc or optionally a Chrysler West Ben 130cc engine. |

Trike: Skytrike Manufacturer: Hiway Hang Gliders |
Wing: Super Scorpion Manufacturer: Hiway Hang Gliders |
Details:
Designed by Frank Tarjyani and manufactured by Hiway Hang Gliders of Gwent, the Hiway Skytrike / Super Scorpion was a groundbreaking weight shift microlight, arguably the first that was commercially available in the United Kingdom. Following mandatory safety regulations in 1988, the type did not reach the status of "Type Acceptance". Possibly because it was considered obsolete by then, the type was designed in 1979 and had been superseded by second-generation aircraft such as the Hiway Demon or the Flexiform dual striker. The Hiway Super Scorpion represented an important step toward the development of flexwing microlight aviation. |

Trike: Hornet Manufacturer: Hornet Microlights |
Wing: Skylink RS Manufacturer: Hornet Microlights |
Details:
The hornet trike is a robust dual-monopole design with side-by-side seating. Hornet previously used the Raven wing (designed by Southdown International) which it purchased from Medway Microlights. Hornet stepped up production of the Hornet Raven when they received a cash injection from a business man wanting to use the microlight as an aerial surveillance platform. Unfortunately at this time Medway having been made solvent again withdrew permission to use there wings on the hornet trike. So Hornet (no known as Skylink) spent time (almost a year) developing a larger stronger wing than the Raven. Skylink employed the skills of Roy Venton-Walters who had designed the Raven and Sprint wings in the early 80's. The new Hornet RS/ZA wing had adjustable roll and pitch control by tip washout struts like the Raven. It also had a 100% double surface with split trailing edge, a large dorsal fin, and increased stiffness of the outer portion of the leading edge spar. All of the above made for a stable, strong, and easy to fly aircraft, even in adverse weather conditions. This new aircraft was considered the Rolls Royce of its days and it was the first microlight to be certified to 390kg. Unfortunately the company closed and following the closure many Hornets were sold complete a second spare wing as backup ! |

Trike: Huntwing Manufacturer: Huntwing |
Wing: Huntwing Manufacturer: Huntwing |
Details:
The Huntwing is a BCAR Section S certified microlight which you can build from plans and which puts up a creditable showing, with a respectable cruising speed of 60mph, and handling competitive with the big names in the microlight market.
The original Huntwing was developed in the early 1980's and gained a permit to Fly on Type acceptance in the mid 1980's. Originally sporting a 440 Robin engine this aircraft G-MMGT flew the length and breadth of the UK and participated in the 1988 Great Microlight Rally. In 4 days the aircraft flew over 1200 miles but was eventually stopped only 80 mile short of the finish by a cracked engine mounting bolt. Changes to the design were made which allowed this combination to continue flying for many more hours and this included its first trip across the English Channel. In late 1989 the engine was replaced with a Rotax 462 which allowed at least a 10 miles per hour cruise increase with better fuel consumption.
Development continued with slight changes to the sail and airframe and in 1992 a decision was made to build a new Huntwing which would then be the first Microlight to be Type approved via the newly obtained authority of the British Microlight Aircraft Association (BMAA).
The Huntwing uses tried and trusted construction techniques, very similar to commercial trikes and the plans consist of 100 drawings and 100 pages of description. The only part of the aircraft that you don't build yourself is the sail, which is manufactured by Top Flight Sails in the UK, who hold the full size mylar patterns.
Due to it's very nature, each flying aircraft has it's own distinguishing features and can differ considerably form others of the same type featuring different engines, pods, wheel spats etc. Shown above are two examples of the Huntwing. |

Trike: Huntwing Manufacturer: Huntwing |
Wing: Blade Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Details:
With the intention of creating a BMW 4-stroke powered Huntwing, initially a completely new trike was built and fitted to G-MMGT the original Huntwing.
Following structural loading tests, noise testing and flight testing was completed successfully and a full Permit to Fly was issued (UK).
The aircraft was flown to Blois in 1999, the Pyrenees and Blois for a second time in 2000 and after some 200 hours of flying the wing was changed for a production Blade wing from Mainair.
Again a full test program was implemented for this new combination and eventually this received a full Permit to Fly in mid 2001.
The Mainair Blade has a top speed approx 10 to 15MPH faster than the Huntwing and a cruise speed approx 5 to 10 MPH greater. It is slightly lighter in pitch, has a good speed trimming device, is slightly heavier in roll than the Huntwing and has a slightly slower stall speed. Overall therefore it has a better speed range and can be purchased straight from Mainair without the hassle of building. |

Klass are well known for their microlight products in the former USSR market but in contrast to other Ukrainian microlight companies such as Aeros, Antares or Aeroprakt, Klass has never before focused on the North or South American markets.
The Klass Competition is the result of further development of the Klass Cruise microlight and enhancements to it's design. The differences include a long fairing which encloses the engine and fiberglass leaf suspension of back wheels instead of shock absorbers. Trike: Gemini Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Flash Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Details:
The Flash (also known as Flash 1) was the first in the Flash series of wings from Mainair Sports and was originally copied from the Sprint wing (designed and produced by Southdown Sails who subsequently went bankrupt due to the costs of certifying the wing to the new section S) resulting in almost identical flying characteristics - heavy in pitch and roll with virtually no event at the stall.
Shown here is the Gemini Flash with a Fuji Robin 440cc inverted engine which was the most common configuration but the Gemini Flash was also available with an upright Fuji Robin 440cc, inverted Rotax 447 and upright Rotax 503 engines.
Models fitted with the Robin 440 inverted engine usually have a metal 'top-tank' positioned laterally on a drip-tray above the engine. Upright Robin versions usually only have the underseat tank since the top-tank restricts access to the spark plugs. Models with the Rotax 447 engines usually have a metal 'top-tank' positioned length-ways above the engine and can be easily identified by a large under-slung exhaust. The Rotax 503 model introduced the rear plastic tank (found on all mainair trikes thereafter) as well as the underseat tank.
The reason for mounting some engine configurations inverted was due to it being found to reduce vibration through the airframe.
The trike features both foot and hand throttles and a simple friction braking system comprising of a sprung metal bar which can be pressed against the tire using by the pilots heel. There is no front suspension & rear suspension is provided by telescopic tubes with rubber compression balls located inside for dampening. |

Trike: Gemini Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Sprint Manufacturer: Southdown International |
Details:
Prior to the development of their own wing, the Flash, Mainair relied upon the wings produced by other companies such as Southdown and Flexiform to mate to their trike units.
The Gemini Sprint (first produced around 1984) is a combination of the Gemini trike unit from Mainair coupled with the popular Sprint wing produced by Southdown. This was one of the first flexwing microlights to gain airworthiness approval.
The trike was virtually identical to that which was used for Mainairs own wing the Flash, and the Sprint wing, a mostly double surface wing which features a drum-tight sails (tensioned by the flex of the leading edge spars) offered similar performance to the Mainair sucessor. The tight sail gave the Sprint wing a sleak look and the wing produced bags of lift compared to the competition of the time. One resultant characteristic of the Sprint was heavy pitch and roll response though the wing offered an unprecedented speed range of 30-60mph in level flight with a hands-off cruise of around 40mph. Only with the introduction of in-flight trim can todays performance wings beat this range.
One of the most noticeable features of the Sprint Wing is the large fin which spans from the kingpost down to the rear of the keel in a triangular shape. Another wing which features this fin is the Raven which is similar in design.
Southdown were also the first manufacturer to work towards and meet the then new Section S certification programme with the Sprint wing. Unfortunately, the cost of meeting this standard eventually led to the companies financial troubles and subsequent closure.
The sprint wing is still available today from Medway Microlights who inherited the rights to this wing and also the Raven, another wing from Southdown designer Roy Venton-Walters.
The Gemini trike unit featured a fibre-gasll pod and cloth skirt as standard and also had rear suspension in the form of rubber compression balls in the suspension struts. A friction brake was also fitted which consisted of a sprung metal bar which could be pushed against the tyre using the heel.
Originally the trike was supplied without
the steering damper found as standard on later machines. This was sold as an optional add-on for approx £26 but was considered a necessity by many.
The Gemini Sprint was powered by a Robin 440 engine. |

Trike: Gemini Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Dual Striker Manufacturer: Flexiform |
Details:
Prior to the development of their own wing, the Flash, Mainair relied upon the wings produced by other companies such as Southdown and Flexiform to mate to their trike units.
Derived originally from the Mainair Tri-Flyer striker, the Gemini Striker is a combination of the newer Gemini Trike unit from Mainair (usually with a Robin 440cc engine) coupled with the Dual Striker wing from Flexiform.
The trike was virtually identical to that which was used for Mainairs own wing the Flash, but the Striker wing (also known as the sealander) was radically different from todays wings. Instead of the usual way of providing tension to the wing by drawing back cross tubes (usually by a pulley mechanism accessed through the rear of the keel), the Striker instead pulled the leading-edges tubes forward using a bowsprit which extends form the nose of the wing and was connected to the leading edge tubes by 4 cables. This unique design produced a considerable weight saving from the cross-tubes used on conventional wings. The sweep-angle of the wing was also much less than that of other wings of that time.
The Gemini Striker offered respectable performance - even by todays standards and was a delightful wing to fly although ground handling wasn't particularly easy due to the 'loose' nature of the sail cloth. The loose sail allowed 'billow shift' which provides a servo action making the wing much lighter in roll. This billowing of the sail also produced a large amount of dihedral and tip washout. In fact, the Striker is one of the few wings which will return to straight and level flight of its own accord - even out of a steep bank.
The Striker wing didn't have very good high speed glide properties and if you pulled the bar in on finals, the wing descended quite rapidly. The advantage of this was the ability to put a Striker into a small field which you may find difficult in other aircraft due to floating-on.

Trike: Tri-flyer Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Typhoon S Manufacturer: Solar Wings |
Details:
A Mainair Tri-flyer with Typhoon wing. This trike was first introduced in 1981 and was flown with a variety of wings. Probablly the most popular was the Solar Wings Typhoon S. This is the combination which was used by Bob Calvert to break the World altitude record in January 1982. The Mainair Tri-flyer is "Type Accepted" which means that a permit to fly can be obtained for this aircraft.
Mainair sold their first Tri-flyer in 1981 and by 1984 they had produced approximately 236 trike units in a number of single and dual seat versions capable of being used with a variety of hang glider wings.
The trikes were usually supplied in kit form and attached to a hang glider. No certification or licences were required at that time.
The Typhoon wing was the first double surface wing produced by Solar Wings and was manufactured in two sizes. The Typhoon S was a revised version to counter improvements made to competing hang-gliding wings. |

Trike: Gemini Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Flash 2 Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Details:
The Flash 2 was the second in the Flash series of wings from Mainair Sports.
The wing looks very much like the original Flash at first glance but is noticable by the absence of tip struts. It also has extra battens and a much tighter skin which made it an incredibly efficient but unforgiving wing, even heavier roll and with a definate pronounced stall. Another difference from the original Flash wing is the position of the A-Frame root on the wing keel. On the Flash, the A-Frame fastens to the Wing-keel behind the hang-point, whereas on the Flash 2 it is in front of the hang-point. The control bar also sits lower (relative to the pilot) than the original Flash.
The Gemini Flash 2 was almost always fitted with a Rotax 503 engine but models can be occasionally be found with the Robin 440, Rotax 447 and Rotax 462 engine.
The trike was almost identical to the original Gemini Flash trike with a Rotax 503 engine including both the foot and hand throttles and the simple friction braking system comprising of a sprung metal bar which can be pressed against the tyre using by the pilots heel.
There is no front suspension & rear suspension is provided by telescopic tubes with rubber compression balls located inside for dampening. |

Trike: Gemini Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Flash 2 Alpha Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Details:
The Flash 2 Alpha (Also known as 'ALPHA') was a revision to the Flash 2 wing from Mainair Sports.
This model introduced the 'next generation' Gemini trike which featured several enhancements over the original Gemini Trike including front and rear suspension, enclosed nosewheel, front drum brake and sharper styling on the wheel spats. This was the first trike from Mainair to feature the streamlined Aerotrack suspension struts (which on this particular model often gave the trike a characteristic lean to one side or the other) and were later fitted to the blade. Later models had a similar styled but slightly shorter pod. This was partly due to the fact that the original pod obstructed the A-frame control bar when raising the trike / wing during rigging.
The older pods can be identified by the black 'tapered rectangles' sticker while later models had an Eagles head sticker usually in silver. Also, later models often had a black under-side.
Engine options included the Rotax 503, Rotax 462 and Rotax 582.
This microlight is no longer produced by the manufacturer but still remains a very popular second hand machine. |

Trike: Gemini Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Flash 2 Alpha Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Details:
The Mainair Mercury was originally introduced as a cheaper alternative to the Gemini Flash 2 Alpha and featured the same wing. The trike unit is more basic than the Gemini Flash 2 Alpha - with extras like the aerotrak suspensions replaced by the earlier rubber compression ball type suspension found on earlier Mainair trikes. In fact the Mercury trike strongly resembles the original Gemini Flash and Flash 2 trikes.
This microlight was very popular amongst flying instructors and was also available in kit form with a good saving over the factory built machine.
Engine options included the Rotax 503, Rotax 462 (Water Cooled). |

Trike: Blade Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Blade Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Details:
Offering co-ordinated handling, high performance and Mainair style and quality, the Blade is available with a choice of Rotax engines including the Rotax 503, Rotax 582, Rotax 912 and Powerful Rotax 912s engine. The trike unit features all-round suspension, aerofoil side struts and axles, rear drum brakes, hand and foot throttles, a single 65 litre fuel tank, aerodynamic pod with sealed nose wheel, finned wheel spats, spacious seating and cockpit.
The wing has an 85% double surface, internal floating cross tubes, washout rods and features an in-flight trimmer for cruise speeds between 45-75 mph. The handling is exceptional, stable enough to cope with the roughest turbulence but light engough for effortless flying. With its ability to perform beautifully in both smooth conditions and the roughest turbulence the Blade wing is considered by many microlight pilots to be the best, most advanced wing available.
With the 912 engine, climb rates of over 1000 ft/min and timed climbs to over 10,000 ft in less than 15 minutes are guaranteed to put a smile on your face !
The Blade is available either factory built, or as a quick build (40hours) kit. |

Details:
The Scorcher was a single seater microlight produced by Mainair Sports and was in the fact the first all-mainair (both wing and trike) solo machine.
Early versions have a metal top-tank and can be recognised by the fact that their wheels are almost invisible due to them being almost totally hidden by the pod and spats.
Later versions of the Scorcher which have the Rotax 503 engine could at first glance be mistaken for the Mainair Mercury as it utilises the same engine cover, rear plastic tank, pod, spats and aerotrak suspension struts but it's single seat gives it away.
Engine options: Rotax 337, 447 or 503 on later models. |

Trike: Skybike Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Wing: Flash Manufacturer: Mainair Sports |
Details:
The Skybike was an experimental prototype microlight from Mainair and integrated a Yamaha YZ80 motorcross motorbike into the trike unit which could be detached and used independently within a couple of minutes.
The motorcycle had its own engine independent of the microlight engine and the pilot sat on the motorcycle seat but used his feet to steer the handle bars on the ground.
The application was military following interest in the Mirac from the British Army.
It is believed that a second prototype was also designed which had a single engine to power both the bike and aircraft propulsion.
The Skybike was test flown up to 5500 feet by Geoff Ball (thanks to Phil Ball for the info and pictures). |

Trike: EclipseR Manufacturer: Medway Microlights |
Wing: Raven Manufacturer: Medway Microlights |
Details:
The EclipseR is the top of the range Raven model, fitted with every refinement and modification.
The aircraft is powered by the 80HP Jabiru 2200cc 4-Stroke Aeroengine (with in- flight variable pitch propeller for maximum efficiency) or the Rotax 912. The pod, spats and engine cover are carbon fiber, and the aircraft boasts hydraulic rear disc brakes and all round suspension and a 42 litre under-slung tank.
It is said that the 912 powered trike doesn't need a trim control. To fly at 50mph you just put the bar slightly forward and it stays there, and if you want to fly at 70mph you pull it slightly further back and it stays there too ! |

Trike: Alize Manufacturer: Michael Gaiguant / DTA |
Wing: Exxtacy 160 Manufacturer: Flight Design |
Details:
This combination of trike and wing is difficult to classify since it has a French built "pendular" trike unit but is not a flex-wing microlight as the wing does not flex! In addition, it is technically not a weightshift microlight either since while the control movements are similar to a weight-shift microlight, weight is only used to control pitch. It turns by using spoilers in the upper wing surfaces. The wing is made principally from carbon fiber. It has no king post or wing bracing struts, acheiving its rigidity from the composite leading edge tubes. The wing has a 12.2m span, nearly constant chord, an aspect ratio of over 10:1 and trailing edge control flaps. The Alize trike is also unconventional for a microlight. Designed by Michael Gaiguant and manufactured for him by DTA in France. It has a space-frame, constructed from aluminium and steel in place of the conventional three piece triangular design. As a result, the pilot sits lower within the frame rather than balancing upon the base pole and the engine has a wide frame to fix on, rather than having to grip the rear pylon tightly and hope it will not turn round! |
